Police have reopened Glenmore Trail after a late afternoon crash claimed the life of one child and sent another child to hospital.

The collision on Glenmore Trail happened near the Deerfoot Trail overpass late Wednesday afternoon.

A black, Dodge pickup truck was travelling eastbound on Glenmore Trail when the driver lost control and rolled into the westbound lanes of traffic and then collided with two semi tractor-trailer units.

An off duty member of the CPS, witnessed the crash and attempted CPR on a young crash victim.

EMS transported two children to the Alberta Children's Hospital.

One child, a 4-year-old boy, was transported in serious but stable condition.

A second child, an 18-month-old boy, was in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries early Wednesday evening.

The two boys were passengers in the pickup truck and both were seated in car seats at the time of impact.

Police set up at major intersections to help ambulances get through the difficult road conditions.

The driver of the pickup truck, the mother of the two boys, escorted her children to hospital.

Police say speed may have been a factor in the crash and are urging motorists to drive to the conditions.

Glenmore Trail was reopened to traffic at about 10:00 p.m.
