Hail storm cleanup event underway to help residents dispose of debris from last week’s storm
After hail wreaked havoc for some Calgary residents last Monday, a cleanup event took place Sunday.
The event took place at 60th Street and Skyview Circle until 2 p.m.. People were allowed to drop off debris and junk caused by the storm for free, in addition to any other household junk they wanted to get rid of, said Zubaair Tariq, a community liason for Ward 5 councillor Raj Dhaliwal, whose office organized the event.
"We got a lot of calls from residents saying we have suffered," said Tariq. "Our houses look really bad. We have debris all over our lawns--and what we need is a place to throw out our debris.
"So we decided we need to do this right away and we organized it really quickly," he added.
Tariq said there were also a large number of community members who still have their storm-damaged debris because the insurance adjustor has to come inspect them.
To facilitate those people, Dhaliwal's office is arranging a second debris drop off event for Sept. 1.
However, that one will only accept hail storm debris and not household stuff like old couches, he added.
"Just keep an eye out on Raj Dhaliwal’s social media and all of their avenues from the city as well, and we’ll make sure that people affected by the hailstorm will have a place that they can throw their stuff out," Tariq said.
Last Monday hail and heavy rain pelted the Calgary area Monday night, causing widespread damage to houses and cars.
The storm ripped across Calgary, bringing hail to the northern part of the city.
The event is being put on by Ward 5 Councillor Raj Dhaliwal.
