Health Canada has shut down a Calgary-based website and is warning consumers about a supplement that lists a dangerous toxic chemical as one of its ingredients.

Miracle Mineral Solution or Miracle Mineral Supplement (also known as MMS) is advertised as a substance that can cleanse toxins from the human body.

However, the product lists a chemical called sodium chlorite which is authorized in Canada for use as a germicide by veterinarians and as a hard surface disinfectant.

MMS distributed through the site claims to contain 28% sodium chlorite solution and when taken as directed, the supplement provides 200 times more sodium chlorite that the tolerable daily intake in water as advised by Health Canada.

Ingesting the supplements can cause serious problems such as poisoning, kidney failure, and harming the red blood cells ability to carry oxygen.

Additional problems include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

Health Canada has already reported three adverse reactions in Canada, including one with a life-threatening reaction.

Consumers are advised to consult their doctor if they have used or are using MMS products.

If consumers have any questions about disposal or refunds regarding MMS associated with the website, contact the distributors at 403-652-1655.

If they experience any adverse conditions as a result of taking the drug, they should contact Health Canada immediately.

Health Canada is working with the distributor to remove the product from the Canadian market.
