Many highways in southern Alberta are in poor condition and a number of travel advisories have been issued.
The QEII north of Calgary from the city limits to Red Deer is in poor condition.
The roadway is covered in snow and is icy in parts and drifting snow is reducing visibility.
RCMP issued an advisory for the roadway at about 1:30 p.m. and are not recommending travel between Airdrie and Red Deer.
Highway 1 east and west is also snow covered and icy in parts.
Cochrane Fire says roads in the area are getting worse and they are also advising against non-essential travel.
Highway 2 south is partly covered and icy in sections all the way to Lethbridge.
The Lethbridge County area is under a travel advisory and RCMP say blowing Snow is creating zero visibility conditions.
The roads are icy and hazardous and police say they are dealing with multiple collisions.
RCMP are encouraging people to avoid unnecessary travel and say if you have to go out drive to the conditions, ensure your headlights are on and increase your stopping distances.
Motorists are advised to pack the vehicle with warm winter gear and emergency provisions before heading out.
Environment Canada has issued a blowing snow warning for Brooks, Starthmore, Vulcan, Cardston, Fort Macleod, Magrath, Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek, Waterton Lakes, Lethbridge, Taber, Milk River, Medicine Hat, Bow Island, Suffield, Cypress Hills
The weather agency says winds are expected to be between 80 and 110 km/h and blowing snow will reduce visibility in some areas to less than a kilometre.
