Language in Calgary's vaccine passport bylaw altered
Calgary councillors have voted in favour of proposed changes to the city's vaccine passport bylaw.
The City of Calgary's vaccine passport bylaw was passed last fall, making it mandatory for all eligible local businesses to opt into Alberta's Restrictions Exemption Program (REP).
City administration recently proposed the bylaw be amended to make it more broadly align with the province's vaccine program.
On Tuesday, councillors voted unanimously in favour of doing so.
The changes they agreed to include altering the language in the bylaw so the definitions of eligibility, identification and proof of vaccination match what the province has in its REP.
It means should the provincial government makes changes to those definitions in the REP, they will automatically be reflected in Calgary's bylaw, eliminating the need for future bylaw amendments.
Youth sports outside of school continues to be included in Calgary's vaccine passport bylaw, but changes were made to the age requirements at Tuesday's council meeting.
Under the amended bylaw, anyone over the age of 12 years and 10 weeks will have to provide a proof of vaccination, a negative COVID-19 test or a vaccine medical exemption letter. However, children under the age of 17 are not required to show personal identification when presenting their vaccination proof.
The city's vaccine bylaw does not apply to someone receiving health, wellness or personal services; someone participating in a faith service at a place of worship, or a child participating in school activities.
Correction
A previous version of this story stated that the changes to the City of Calgary's bylaw meant that youth sports were no longer exempt, which was put in error.
