Police in Lethbridge are investigating after the body of a 56-year-old woman was found in an apartment early Sunday evening and they are treating her death as a homicide.

Police were called to the 100 block of Columbia Boulevard at about 5:15 p.m. after someone reported a disturbance at the address.

The woman was found inside one of the apartments and died a short time later.

“Upon arrival we found a female suffering from some significant injuries. EMS was called and subsequently pronounced the female dead on scene,” said S/Sgt. Scott Woods.

The K9 unit conducted a search of the area and a number of people who were in the apartment were detained for questioning.

An autopsy is scheduled in Calgary in the next few days to determine a cause of death and police say the name of the victim is being withheld until next of kin have been notified.

“I think anytime somebody ends up dying as a result of an attack, I would suggest that would be violent for sure,” said Woods.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and that there is nothing to indicate a risk to the public.

Officials say they are aware of rumours circulating in the community that this death may be related to the death of a 78-year-old Irene Carter in January and say there is no evidence to suggest the two cases are connected.
