A team made up of Calgary Police officers and RCMP have now laid charges against a man who was arrested at the scene of a house explosion on Wednesday.
Crews responded to a call of an explosion in the northwest community of Royal Oak at just before 8 p.m.
When they arrived on scene at a home in the 200 block of Royal Oak Heights N.W. , they found that a garage door had been blown out.
First responders to the scene found four devices, originally believed to be pipe bombs, in the garage, and immediately evacuated the area as a precaution.
The items turned out to be homemade hash oil filters and the explosion was the result of a man's alleged attempt to produce cannabis resin.
A search by police also found a small marijuana grow operation in the home.
Richard Edward Hyde, 33, has been charged with two counts of production of a controlled subtance, and one count each of possession of marijuana, rendering a property dangerous, and arson.
“We are fortunate this incident did not result in more widespread damage or serious injuries,” said CFSEU-Calgary Sgt. Len Dalton in a release. “The potential for harm when people engage in this kind of activity is significant, and we encourage residents to be on the lookout for and report suspicious activity to police.”
