A man who was tasered by police on the weekend has died.

Police responded to a call about a break-and-enter and confronted an agitated man in the basement of a home in the 500 block of 42nd Street S.E. on Saturday night.

The suspect refused to follow orders to come out and officers deployed the taser to subdue him.

Gordon Walker Bowe, 30, from Castlegar, B.C., went into medical distress after he was wrestled to the ground and handcuffed.

He was assessed by EMS and transported to hospital where he later died.

Police say the taser appeared to be unsuccessful and investigators believe the suspect was on drugs when he crashed head first through a plate glass window into the vacant home.

The police union says while the incident is tragic the suspect brought it on himself.

"It wasn't a successful deployment of the taser for this individual," said John Dooks of the Calgary Police Association, "I would say regardless of whether the taser worked or not, this individual died as a result of his own actions."

Six members of the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team are investigating the incident.

The team's mandate is to investigate incidents or complaints involving serious injury or death of any person, and matters of a serious or sensitive nature, that may have resulted from the actions of a police officer.
