The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team continues to investigate an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead at a northeast Calgary hotel on Monday.

Police were called to a Super 8 Motel at 3030 Barlow Trail N.E. at about 3:00 p.m. after staff reported a man behaving strangely.

Officers attended the room and found the door locked by a security chain when they tried to open it with a key provided by the motel.

Police spoke with the man inside and say he appeared to be agitated and was possibly in medical distress.

The man did not let officers in and closed the door.

Police were concerned about the man's welfare and called EMS.

They then made the decision to forcibly enter the unit and a confrontation ensued that police say escalated into a high-risk situation.

Police deployed a taser, which had little impact, and a service revolver was then discharged.

The 27-year-old man was hit and died at the scene.

ASIRT says the man was supposed to check out that morning and that's what prompted the check on welfare.

Calgary Police Chief Paul Cook says the situation is very difficult for members of the CPS.

"I think we would all expect that these are very traumatic incidents. None of us come to work thinking we're going to be involved in something like this. Specifically, I haven't spoken to the officer, but we would have whatever care available to these officers who were involved. These are traumatic incidents for all of us."

None of the officers were injured during the incident.

Cook says the officer who was involved in the shooting has three years’ experience with the Calgary Police Service, but 20 years’ experience elsewhere.

He adds that these are complex investigations and says there will be a full and complete investigation into the matter.

The identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

ASIRT has taken the lead on the investigation and officials say an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
