A make-shift memorial is growing for a four-year-old girl who was hit and killed by a truck on a northwest street on Friday night.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of 79 Street and 47 Avenue N.W. at about 8:00 p.m. for reports that a child had been hit by a vehicle.

EMS found a young girl suffering from serious injuries and administered treatment, but she succumbed to her injuries.

The girl, named Avi, and her family were walking to the river when their dog had an aggressive encounter with another dog so the children went on ahead of the adults.

The children asked their mother if they could cross and she told them to go ahead. Avi was a few steps behind her siblings when she was hit by the pickup.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene and police say they don't expect to lay any charges.

Investigators say they have ruled out speed and alcohol as factors in the crash.

The family says they are having a hard time believing that the driver couldn't see Avi and that her four siblings yelled for her to get out of the way.

Avi's mother Samantha isn't looking at blame and says she hopes others will slow down.

"Watch where you're going, it's not speed. I don't think she was speeding, to be honest, I really don't think she was speeding, the woman that hit my daughter, she wasn't paying attention," she said.

The little girl's death happened the same week as the city passed its new Pedestrian Strategy.

The plan will bring more flashing lights to crosswalks and eventually more underpasses and overpasses will also be built at busy intersections.

The plan also called for slower speeds in residential areas but that was dropped and the city says there are no plans to pursue it.
