A man is facing charges after police say he stole a taxi cab that had stopped to help out after the suspect himself was involved in a crash with another vehicle near High River.

RCMP says that on March 16, at about 6:10 a.m., they responded to a two-vehicle crash on 498 Avenue E.

When officers arrived at the scene, they learned that one of the drivers involved in the crash had reportedly driven away in a taxi cab that had stopped to help the disabled drivers.

Police were not able to track the suspect due to weather, but found that the taxi cab was equipped with a GPS tracking device.

That eventually led them to the suspect and stolen taxi in a rural area outside of High River.

Dustin Andrew Sklerek, 31, of no fixed address has been charged with:

  • theft of a motor vehicle
  • three counts of possession of stolen property
  • possession of break-in instruments
  • obstructing a police officer
  • driving while disqualified

Investigators also learned that the original vehicle that Sklerek was in was also stolen, from Calgary.

Police are now investigating the large quantity of stolen goods that police say he transferred into the cab before RCMP arrived.
