Shannon Johnston joined CTV Calgary in October 2019 in the role of assignment editor.

A native Calgarian and Mount Royal Broadcasting graduate, Shannon began her career as an anchor and video journalist with CTV Prince Albert back in 2002. It wasn’t long before she went to work for CTV in Regina and later at CTV Saskatoon.  

As an assignment editor, Shannon has a broad knowledge of current events, with a keen interest in city hall, civic matters and stories that matter to Calgarians.

Shannon grew up watching CFCN (CTV Calgary) and is thrilled to be a part of a newsroom dedicated to telling the stories happening in her hometown.

She speaks English.

On September 9, 1960, CTV News Calgary (CFCN) went on the air for the first time and was the first independent television station in Canada.

The first broadcast was a 30-minute news program, followed by two movies, bringing then owner H. Gordon Love’s life-long dream to reality.

CFCN became a member of the Canadian Television Network (CTV) in October 1961 and one of the station’s longest running shows, The Buck Shot Show, started in 1967.

CTV News Calgary, created a number of firsts in Canadian television, as an owned and operated local of CTV News.

  • First to produce a Canadian Football League game from the prairies for CTV
  • Instituting instant replay in Western Canada
  • Brought Crime Stoppers to Calgary
  • Initiated Child Find on television

Canada’s largest telecommunications company, Bell Canada Enterprises, has owned CTV News Calgary since 2000.
