The Rockyview Hospital has a big, new emergency department.

The hospital sees 70,000 patients each year and the new department should be able to better service them.

The current emergency department is crowded and hallways have become treatment areas.

The new emergency department is significantly larger. One of the first things patients may notice is there are walls instead of curtains between beds. Not only is there more room, there is natural light, chairs where patients can be treated if they don't need a bed.

Ultimately the goal is to improve patient flow and therefore reduce wait times.

Rockyview's new emergency room opens up at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Alberta Health Services hasn't decided what it will do with the old emergency department.
