A poor decision by a truck driver Saturday morning may serve as a reminder of the importance of observing bridge height clearance limits.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., fire crews and police officers responded to the 900 block of 1 St. S.W after a tractor-trailer unit unsuccessfully attempted to travel through the underpass of the CP Rail line.

The trailer was taller than the 3.8 metre clearance of the bridge and the deck shredded the trailer’s roof, sending the sides of the container collapsing into the neighbouring lanes.  The driver was not injured in the crash.

The speed of the truck caused both the truck and the remainder of the trailer to become wedged under the bridge.

1 St. S.W. was closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic between 9 Ave. and 10 Ave. to accommodate the removal of the rig.  The truck was freed of the bridge at approximately 2:30 a.m.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
