Winter weather played havoc with Friday afternoon travel on the QEII highway and claimed the life of one person.

According to Staff Sgt. Sangster, at approximately 1:00 p.m., a southbound pickup truck struck the back of  a semi south of the town of Bowden. The collision claimed the life of the driver of the pickup truck, a 29-year-old man from Leduc, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.

Southbound QEII traffic was diverted to Highway 2A at Highway 587.

According to RCMP, highway conditions and visibility are extremely poor between Red Deer and Calgary,  and travel is not recommended.

Motorists are encouraged to check highway conditions at 511 Alberta prior to their departure. Drivers who choose to travel are asked to drive to current highway conditions and take steps to ensure their vehicles are properly equipped.
