Calgary-based Kevin Fleming started his career in television at CFCN in 1985.  He was a keen 19-year-old right out of NAIT who started work in studio & mobile production.  Calgary was one of the few stations in the CTV network that had the ability to produce television sports and other shows on location.  Kevin and the CFCN mobile crew travelled western Canada following professional football, hockey and baseball.  Kevin quickly developed a passion for operating a camera at these events.

The Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics were a highlight.  Not only did the CFCN crew work the year prior on testing Olympic venues at World Cup events, but during the Olympics the team was based out of Max Bell arena working on curling and short track speed skating.  Kevin operated a remote camera that was used to follow a curling rock into the rings from directly above.  It was the first time that technology was used for curling, and it is now common place today at tournaments all over the world.

Shortly after the games Kevin moved into the newsroom where he began as an editor.  After a year he transitioned into shooting news and sports stories.  In 1993, Kevin won an award for a piece he produced on a Calgary Stampede athlete competing in the nightly chuckwagon races.  He followed the outrider throughout the evening’s nine races on and off the track showing many different angles that have been adopted in today’s live coverage of the event.

In 1998, Kevin made another move within the station becoming the station’s first Photojournalist, combining the role of shooter and reporter.  Kevin has worked on almost every kind of news story in his career but enjoys human interest stories in particular working with Alberta Parks and Parks Canada on public safety issues and the environment.  He’s had the opportunity to travel numerous times to Disneyland for stories with ‘Dreams Take Flight’, a group that sends medically challenged and under privileged children to the theme park in California for a whirlwind one day trip.

Kevin has had to opportunity to work with and learn from many reporters, photographers, and news staff at CTV and other stations in his career.  But there’s one person that stands out as a mentor - former long-time CFCN reporter Gord Kelly.  Kevin says ”Gord was a great story teller and was able to connect with people he interviewed, and put them at ease.”  He adds  “I aspire to make that connection with everyone I meet”.

Kevin speaks English.
