On the first day of the trial, documents revealed that Aset Magomadova admitted to police that she killed her daughter with a scarf.

Aminat Magomadova was found strangled in the family's southwest Calgary home on February 26th, 2007.

An agreed statement released by the court details the events leading up to Aminat's death and tells how her mother called 911 to say she killed her daughter.

When police arrived at the Fairview home they found the body of Aminat and say Aset described to them how she'd used a scarf to kill her.

At the time, Aminat was experiencing increasing problems at home, in school and with authorities.

Aset's lawyer is arguing that she acted in self-defence and is asking the judge to take into account events that happened more than six months before Aminat's death.

"If we are able to bring evidence of prior acts of violence or evidence of a propensity towards violence by the deceased then we can show that it was more likely she who started the fight, that she was the aggressor and that bolsters the legal defence of self-defence," said Defence lawyer Mark Tyndale.

Aset Magomadova also admitted to making phone calls to Europe for ten minutes before calling 911 to report her daughter's death and that no attempt was made to revive the girl.
