A Calgary mother has been sentenced for failing to provide the necessities of life to her daughter.

Lisa Guerin will spend another six months in jail after her daughter, Summer Hope, died from a methadone overdose.

Guerin and Jonathan Hope were found guilty of failing to provide the necessities of life for their 16-month-old daughter.

In 2006, Summer died after drinking her father's methadone.

Guerin knew Summer had ingested the drug but left her with Hope to go to work in Rocky Mountain House.

On Friday, Justice Earl Wilson sentenced Guerin to two-and-a-half years with a credit of two years for time served.

The prosecutor is leaving the door open for an appeal. "The sentence would be a penitentary term - but for time served - so with that it's a mixed message for us today. We'll obviously have to think hard and reivew the judge's decision before going any further," says Ken McCaffrey.
