A Calgary family has been told the Thai police officer charged in their son's death has been sentenced to 25 years for murdering his pregnant wife.

Leo Del Pinto, 25, died after being shot in the face and chest in a northern Thailand town in January 2008.

His friend, Carly Reisig of BC was also hit once in the chest, but survived.

Sergeant Uthai Dechawiwat, who was off duty at the time, has been charged with murder with intent and attempted murder with intent.

In a release, the Del Pinto family says it's happy to see some form of justice served, but continues to be frustrated by the inconsistencies of the Thai justice system.

A pre-trial hearing is set to wrap up around April.
