Police have determined that no explosives were inside a suspicious package left near Calgary's Old City Hall on Friday morning.
A section of the downtown core was closed for several hours after police learned about a suspicious package that was left unattended.
They say the package was discovered at around 7:30 a.m. outside the buiding on Macleod Tr. at 7 Ave. S.E.
Eyewitnesses tell CTV that they saw a man throw a duffle bag down at the building and then run to board the CTrain.
Tactical units arrived on scene at around 10 a.m. to examine the package and used an X-ray to scan the contents.
They also physically examined the package and determined that there was nothing dangerous inside and that the bag contained clothing and personal items.
Police blocked off traffic on northbound Macleod Trail at 9 Ave. S.E. and set up traffic detours in the area.
Calgary Transit suspended LRT traffic at the City Hall platform.
LRT service was returned to normal at about 11:00 a.m. and police reopened the roads to traffic and pedestrians after they cleared the scene.
This is the third incident of this type involving a suspicious package in Calgary in the past week.
On Wednesday, The Tactical Unit was called to the Calgary Courts Centre after a suspicious device was found by sheriffs in a screening machine and the courthouse was locked down.
A man was questioned and released and the object was found to contain no explosive material.
Last Friday, a suspicious letter forced the evacuation of the Crown prosecutor's office.
Bomb technicians were called in and 3 St. at 6 Ave. S.W. was closed for a period of time in the afternoon.
The envelope turned out to be harmless.
