You may have noticed some increased activity in the skies above Kananaskis on Monday, as the North American Aerospace Defense Region (NORAD) conducted training in the area.

NORAD was scheduled to conduct training and equipment testing near Kananaskis featuring CF-18 Hornet fighter jets and CH-146 Griffon helicopters from the Royal Canadian Air Force and a KC-135 tanker from the United States Air Force.

“As part of the exercise, these NORAD-tasked aircraft might be seen in close proximity to contracted civilian aircraft and may be visible overflying local airports,” NORAD said in a news release.

The training was meant to practise airborne threat response procedures.

The exercise included the CH-146 Griffons flying at low altitudes, while the other planes operated at higher altitudes.
