All members of a Valley Ridge family are safe and accounted for after a Sunday morning fire in the northwest community severely damaged the basement of their home.

At approximately 8:00 a.m., Calgary Fire Department crews responded to reports of a house fire on Valley Meadows Cl. N.W. The house exhibited no external signs of a fire but firefighters determined a blaze was occurring inside the home.

Fearing a backdraft, crews used ventilation methods before safely entering the home through the walk-out doors of the basement. CFD members encountered a fire in the basement and successfully extinguished it.

No one was injured in the blaze as the home was unoccupied during the fire. CFD officials determined the residents of the home were on vacation at the time of the fire.

The efforts of fire crews prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
