A police officer has been transported to hospital with undisclosed injuries following a serious Friday afternoon collision.

The crash occurred just before 5:00 p.m. at the intersection of Macleod Trail and 5 Ave. S.W.

According to police, the officer was responding to a priority call at the time of the crash.  The lights and siren were activated on the cruiser when it was struck by an SUV on the driver’s side.

The impact of the collision mangled the frame of the police car and crews used the Jaws of Life to free the officer from the wreckage.

Two nurses and an off-duty officer provided medical assistance to the officer until EMS arrived on scene.

An investigation into the crash is underway. Any one who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
