Officials with Parks Canada have announced that they will be going with a Lethbridge-based company to build the new visitor centre for Waterton Lakes National Park.

FWBA Architects has been named the primary consultant for the project to build the new facility in Block 39 of the townsite.

Parks Canada says it made the decision at the end of a competitive process to find the best location to meet the needs of visitors and the community.

Residents have had misgivings about that location, saying that it would create traffic and parking problems, as well as take away one of the only green spaces left in the community.

Parks Canada says that 98 percent of visitors to the area already go the townsite, further cementing that as the ideal location for the building.

The new building will replace the old centre because it was found inadequate to handle over 400,000 people the park receives annually.

It will cost $7.6M to build the new facility and full federal funding was approved in July 2015.

Construction is expected to begin in 2018 and wrap up by 2019.
