It was less than a week into 2013 before Calgary police were dealing with their first homicide of the New Year and they are now asking for the public’s help in tracking down a suspect.

30-year-old Matthew John Brown was stabbed in the chest around 6 a.m. on Saturday inside a home in Taradale.

Brown’s girlfriend Jennifer Harker came home to see that police were already inside the home.

She says that she went downstairs to where Brown was and saw him bleeding from a stab wound to the chest.

“I told him that we love him, and tried to tell him to get up because we need him, and, you know,” Harker said.

Police are continuing the search for Brown’s killer, but Harker says her focus is on her daughter now, who will grow up without a father. “The most frustrating thing for me is somebody took him away from my daughter, and now our daughter is never going to get to know her father.”

Police say that Brown had been hosting a small house party at the Taradale home when an altercation broke out.

“That altercation escalated and resulted with Brown being stabbed,” says CPS Staff Sergeant Grant Miller.

Neighbours say there was often loud music from the house and police ended up following up several times.

One woman says she isn’t surprised that something more serious happened. “If it came from somewhere else, I would be surprised, but from that house? No, not really.”

Police say the party had left the home several hours before he was found dead and they are still trying to work out where Brown went and who was inside the home when the stabbing occurred.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call police or Crimestoppers.
