The investigation into a fatal collision on Glenmore Trail that killed a toddler continues and police believe excessive speed for the road conditions was a major factor in the crash.
Emergency crews were called out to a collision at about 5:00 p.m. Wednesday on Glenmore Trail about 300 metres west of Deerfoot Trail.
Police say a Dodge Ram truck was travelling eastbound on the roadway when it crossed into the centre median and into the path of a westbound semi tractor-trailer unit.
The pickup was spun around by the impact into the far lane.
Two children, seated in the rear of the pickup, were taken to hospital by EMS.
An 18-month-old boy, Travis Bertrand, was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving and his brother, Zachery, 4, was admitted in critical condition. He remains in Alberta Children's Hospital in stable condition.
The children's mother, Francina, was also taken to hospital and has since been released.
Police say it is believed that excessive speed for the road conditions was a major factor in the crash.
"The snow that's piled up at the collision location is certainly a factor that we'll take into account as part of our investigation. At this point this is not the time to lay any blame. The is the time to continue with our investigation and certainly support the family involved," said CPS Insp. Michael Watterston.
