Calgary police have released the identity of a man who was found dead in the southeast community of Forest Lawn on Wednesday morning.

Police were called to the 2600 block of 43 Street S.E. at about 5:55 a.m. and found a man dead in front of a home in the area.

An autopsy was conducted and the man has been identified as Jonathan Joe Schmeikal, 34, of Calgary.

“The victim was found by a passerby who was concerned about his welfare. They discovered the individual and checked on him and contacted the Calgary Police Service. He was in a bit of a concealed location between a couple of vehicles so he was hard to find,” Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus of the CPS Homicide Unit.

Police are not releasing the cause of death and say it was not a random incident.

“There is nothing to indicate this was a random incident however a specific motive is yet to be determined,” said Staff Sgt. Andrus.

Police are still investigating and say that even though some media reported shots being heard in the area, no reports were made to them before the body was found.

“We did do a search of the area and we found no physical evidence to confirm that there were any shots fired in the area however, we take any information and include it in our investigation so we don’t overlook it,” said Andrus.

On Friday, police were at a residence near 26 Avenue SE and say it is related to the case.

“Through our neighbourhood inquiries, we determined that there was a confrontation in a residence prior to the victim being found and we’re working to see if that confrontation and that location is related to our victim. We’re conducting a forensic investigation of the residence and that will probably take several days to complete,” said Andrus.

Schmeikal is Calgary's 21st homicide of 2015.
