A woman has died from her injuries in hospital after she was found shot in a car in a busy northwest intersection on Wednesday night and police are searching for suspects and a man who may have also been injured in the incident.

Police were called to the scene near Tipperary’s Pub at 16 Avenue and 19 Street N.W. at about 11:15 p.m. for reports of shots fired.

When they arrived, they found a car stopped in the left, eastbound turn lane on 16th Avenue with a seriously injured woman inside.

A 23-year-old woman was taken from the scene in critical, life threatening condition to hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.

Police have identified the shooting victim as Kallen Brianne Carothers of Calgary.

“Part of the ongoing investigation, I’m sure they will be sweeping the area looking for CCTV,” said CPS Duty Inspector Paul Wyatt. “Still speaking to witnesses, gathering evidence, waiting for the autopsy, that type of information so there’s lots of ongoing investigation that has to be done.”

Witnesses say they heard a series of shots in the area and that a person got out of a white car and ran towards a nearby stripmall. They say they heard another series of shots but didn’t see much else.

A white car with a broken driver’s side window and what appear to be bullet holes in the door was found at the scene.

Investigators believe there may have been a man in the vehicle who may need medical attention and say it appears the attack was not random.

The man is described as:

  • Black male
  • In his 20s
  • Between 178 and 183 cm or 5’ 10” and 6’ tall
  • Thin build
  • Was wearing white pants at the time of the incident
  • May be injured

“Any type of firearm injury is significant so I don’t know how badly that person is injured, obviously that’s a concern for us,” said Wyatt. “I would hope he comes forward, seeks medical assistance and helps us with our inquiries.”

Diane Virtz, who lives in the area said she had her window open and had just fallen asleep when she heard gunshots outside. "I heard pop, pop, pop and I said to my husband, 'what is that' and he said 'that's a gun'. We were waiting for sirens but we never heard sirens."

Virtz says the incident is a bit unnerving because it took place so close to where they live. "It can happen anywhere."

Police say the victim was not known to them and confirm that multiple shots were fired.

“It’s a busy intersection and obviously we, as well as the public, are very concerned about this type of activity. A young lady lost her life last night but it could be much worse because of proximity, a public place. There’s a public house across the road, it’s a busy intersection,” said Wyatt. “Yes, we’re acutely aware of the rise in shootings recently and we’re looking into it.”
