On the heels of Deborah Drever’s suspension from the NDP over posts made on her social media accounts, several citizens hosted a rally calling for the much-maligned MLA’s resignation.

Organized by high school student Jesse Robitaille, Sunday’s rally questioned the qualifications and maturity of the 26-year-old political rookie who will sit in the Legislature as an independent.

“I'm asking Deborah Drever to resign,” explains Robitaille. “I don't feel like she has a mature attitude to be in government. I don't feel like she takes the job seriously”

Following Drever’s election night victory in Calgary-Bow, a series of photographs surfaced allegedly from the 26-year-old’s personal Facebook and Instagram accounts.

NDP leader Rachel Notley said Drever issued an apology for the photographs and the then Premier-Designate asked the Calgary-Bow MLA-elect to work with women’s groups.

Drever’s tenure with the NDP was short lived as another photograph depicting speech bubbles over two PC leaders surfaced and Notley suspended the 26-year-old.

If Drever refuses to resign, her critics would like a recall vote but Alberta has no legislation to force a byelection.

Paige MacPherson of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says Albertans should have the opportunity to hold their elected officials accountable for their actions.

“So that citizens of Alberta, across the province, can directly hold their politicians to account,” explains MacPherson. “We think that they should have the opportunity to do that more than once every four years.”
