The legal team of Dustin Paxton, the man accused of the assault and confinement of his former roommate and coworker, lost the battle to block the testimony of a key psychologist.

Dr. Kris Mohandie, an American psychologist who worked on the O.J. Simpson case and the Steven Spielberg stalker trial took the stand Wednesday morning.

Mohandie is an expert on stalking, human captivity, and extreme violence.

He's expected to counter the claim that Paxton's alleged torture victim could have left at any time after months of abuse.

Mohandie says that abusers don't need ropes and chains to keep someone confined, that intimidation and manipulation can also be tools of confinement.

The testimony is key to the Crown's case, especially after the victim himself testified that he had the chance to escape from Dustin but felt compelled to stay.

The Crown says that Dr. Mohandie will help demonstrate that Paxton and the victim were in an alleged batter spouse relationship.

Paxton's lawyers tried to block the testimony on Tuesday by challenging Mohandie's expertise.

Mohandie's testimony continues.
