RCMP in Canmore has arrested a B.C. man after they found nearly $18,000 worth of marijuana inside his vehicle when it was stopped for speeding.

On January 26 at about 9:50 p.m., RCMP pulled over a van that was clocked at 62 km/h above the posted speed limit near the gates to Banff National Park.

The officer who pulled the driver over spoke with him for a short while and detected an odour of marijuana.

The driver turned over a small quantity of drugs to the officer, who then arrested him and proceeded to search the vehicle.

The investigation found an additional 4 pounds of marijuana, possessing a street value of about $18,000.

James Drennan, 29, of Kelowna, has been charged with possession of a substance for the purpose of trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and speeding under the Traffic Safety Act.

Drennan will appear in Canmore Provincial Court in February.
