A Calgary renovation company chooses a few projects a year to give back to the community, this year it’s for a family of six with twins on the way.

With four kids under nine years old, Janet Zacharias and her husband knew they needed more than their two-bedroom home, but selling it wasn’t going to work.

“The market is not doing very well right now,” Janet said. “Basically, for what people were offering us, we could buy our house again. That wasn’t going to work for us!”

So they decided to get the basement finished, which would add two more bedrooms. They contacted several renovation companies, but the cost was going to be a problem.

“We sort of know what the numbers are going to be as soon as we see the basement, and she was giving us her needs list, and we could do the math really quickly and it wasn't adding up,” said Greg Wagner of Wallace Fleming Design and Renovate.

But the story of the family with twins on the way inspired Greg and his partner Vaughan to do the job at cost. It’s something they do every year for people in need.

“This should cost around $35,000 and we are paying $25,000, it’s about a third of the cost, which is big,” said Janet. “In this market, people are having trouble getting renovation jobs, so for them to offer now, that’s actually even more generous of them.”

The company is pretty small too, just five people, but the work is good for keeping employees earning money, and is a blessing to the Zacharias family.

The work will take about six weeks to complete, just in time for the arrival of the twins.
