Alberta is one step closer to having an official sport.

Outgoing Liberal Leader Kevin Taft dressed up in Western gear earlier this month to introduce a private member's motion recognizing rodeo as Alberta's official sport.

The motion was passed in the legislative assembly Monday night.

However, the motion is not binding; therefore the Alberta government is not obligated to do anything with it.

Taft announced his plan to step down after the Alberta Liberals lost half their seats to Premier Ed Stelmach's Tory juggernaut in the March 3 election.

His successor will be named in Calgary on December 13th.
