Calgary police continue to search for a suspect in the shooting death of a young woman on Wednesday night and have released a description of a possible suspect vehicle.

Police were called to the intersection of 16 Avenue and 19 Street N.W.at about 11:15 p.m. for reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found a white sedan in the left turning lane of 16 Avenue with a seriously injured woman inside.

She was rushed to hospital where she later died.

Police have identified the victim as 23-year-old Kallen Brianne Carothers and say that there was another person in the car with her at the time of the shooting.

Investigators say so far they have not located the other individual and believe he may have been injured in the incident

“He was in the victim’s car when the shooting occurred and after the shooting left the car and fled in a westbound direction from 16th Avenue and 19th Street northwest. We believe that this male, this black male, was injured in the shooting. ” said A/Staff Sgt. Mike Cavilla, CPS Homicide Unit.  “We’re looking for the male that fled from the victim’s vehicle as a witness.”

They are asking the public for help to find him and say he is described as:

  • Black male
  • In his 20s
  • Between 178 and 183 cm or 5’ 10” and 6’ tall
  • Thin build
  • Was wearing white pants at the time of the incident
  • May be injured

Friends of Carothers say she was studying to become a medical assistant and loved fashion and hip-hop.

Police say it was not a random attack and that they do not yet have any suspects.

“We have not identified any suspects for this shooing as of yet,” said Cavilla. “This is not a random attack, it’s a targeted attack but with that being said, it is too early in the investigation to determine if the victim, our female victim, was a target or not.”

Cavilla says it appears the shooting was a drive-by scenario and that police have a description of the suspect vehicle.

“We do have a suspect vehicle, a possible suspect vehicle that fled northbound right after the shooting. We have a pretty vague description of this, all we have is a dark, blue, four-door car possibly with tinted windows and that was from witnesses at the scene,” said Cavilla.

Police say they don’t believe the shooting to be gang-related and have canvassed area businesses for CCTV footage to help in their investigation.

Carothers is Calgary's 19th murder victim of the year.

A GoFundMe page has been established to help pay for the costs of her funeral.
