Airdrie RCMP managed to safely stop a semi tractor-trailer, believed stolen from Red Deer, after it fled from police southbound along Highway 2 on Friday night.

Officials were first notified about the incident at 9:45 p.m. on March 23 after a semi tractor-trailer failed to stop for police.

The semi was heading southbound on Highway 2 from Didsbury and officers say there was a concern for public safety because it was believed that the semi was stolen from a location in Red Deer and then used to crash into a number of parked cars.

RCMP deployed a spike belt in an attempt to stop the truck, but only managed to damage several tires on the truck.

The semi continued to drive down Highway 2 and then turned onto Highway 2A, heading through Crossfield, continuing through Airdrie despite having completely lost one front tire.

Multiple RCMP detachments involved in the incident then requested the help of the RCMP Emergency Response Team as well as the Calgary Police Service HAWCS and TAC Team.

A joint operation, conducted on 40 Avenue in Airdrie, stopped the semi with no injuries to anyone involved.

A male suspect was arrested at the scene and remains in custody.

The investigation is still ongoing and more updates will be provided when they become available.
