Shaw’s reorganization of its customer care operations will see staffing increases in B.C., Manitoba and Quebec, and the closure of call centres in Alberta’s two largest cities.

On Wednesday, Shaw announced realignments plans which will result in the demise of its Calgary and Edmonton’s contact centres and a reduction in staff at the Kelowna contact centre.

Calgary’s contact centre will close in January 2016, following the June 2015 closure of its Edmonton counterpart.

Approximately 1,600 employees will be directly impacted by the closures. Shaw plans to assist the employees by:

  • Relocating staff to other contact centre (offering $7,500 to assist with moving fees)
  • Offering staff new roles in their current location
  • Offering a ‘generous severance package’

"We deeply value the contributions our employees make to our business. We know that change is difficult and we will support them during this process," said Chris Kucharski, V.P. of Shaw Communications consumer division. "We have allowed several months for a smooth transition, and to provide employees with opportunities to continue growing in our company."

Shaw plans to expand its contact centre staff in Victoria, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Montreal.

According to Shaw officials, the contact centre changes will not impact the more than 4,100 Shaw employees who work in Edmonton, Calgary and Kelowna in non-contact centre roles.
