Calgary’s first snowfall of the season sent police, tow truck drivers, and snow plow drivers scrambling.
There were a total of 74 reported collisions between noon on Saturday and 6 a.m. on Sunday in Calgary, two of which injury collisions.
Police say those numbers aren’t that bad considering it’s the first major snowfall of the season, in a city of a million people, on a weekend.
Despite the icy roads, police say weather was not a factor in the most serious crash that put a 23-year-old man in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of a grey Mazda was headed southbound on Bonaventure Drive S.E. when he lost control of the vehicle, left the road, and struck a tree. The accident happened just after midnight, and police say alcohol and speed are to blame.
As for road conditions over the next few days, expect things to get worse. CTV’s Skywatch weather forecast calls for about 10 centimetres of snow to fall on Monday night with temperatures dipping to at least -7.
Police are reminding drivers to change their habits with the weather; slowing down and leaving enough distance between cars to stop.
