A late night crash between a freight train and a minivan sent two adults to hospital in serious, but non-life threatening condition.

EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux says crews responded to the 5900 block of 17 Avenue Southeast, near Elliston Park, at approximately 12:15 a.m. following reports of a collision at a street level railway crossing.

First responders encountered a minivan with significant damage to both the driver and passenger sides. Two people, a man and a woman both believed to be in their mid-forties, were trapped inside the wreckage of the passenger vehicle.

The two occupants of the minivan were extricated from the minivan and transported by ambulance to the Foothills Medical Centre in serious, but non-life threatening condition,

Initial reports indicate the train struck the minivan, sending the vehicle into the support post for the lights at the railway crossing.

Police and rail officials continue to investigate the incident.
