IPSC Grand Master, Ivan Runions is a 32 year veteran of a unique form of sports shooting that involves cardboard and steel targets.

“Its very intriguing and interesting and you go and watch it and it’s addictive. You see it and it looks like so much fun,” said Runions. “This sport is about engaging shooting multiple targets as quickly and as safely as possible.”

Runions says anybody who likes an action sport will enjoy this event.

“That’s what this is about cause when you come off of a good stage, the adrenalin is just coursing through your system and indeed to compete well, part of the challenge is to control that adrenalin because if you get adrenalin you will shake and shaking doesn’t work well for accuracy. Some of the targets are easy and some of the targets are very difficult,” said Runions.

Runions is a member of the International Practical Shooting Confederation.

The group originates in southern California but it also enjoys a strong following here in Alberta.

The sport has taken Runions all over the world to compete.

“I compete provincially so all over the province. Nationally, I’ve been to pretty much every province in the country. I compete in the US a fair bit. Internationally, I’ve been to Ecuador, Philippines, Great Britain. Last fall the world shoot was in Greece. Our world shoot is every third year and the next one in three years or two and a half years from now, will be in Florida and I hope to be able to go and do that.”

Runions is competing this weekend at the provincials and is the CTV Calgary Athlete of the Week for Friday, June 29, 2012.
