Kevin Brockwell of the Calgary Police Service says the police can't reveal anything about a motive for the stabbings on Tuesday at a house party in northwest Calgary.  However, he did say the suspect was mingling with people before the stabbing.

He added that the suspect was good friends with at least one person at the party.

Brockwell also says it isn't clear if anyone tried to intervene and stop the stabbings, but he says people may have "froze" or they may have run, but investigators are still talking to witnesses to try to determine exactly what happened.

CTV News is learning more from friends about what they call increasingly erratic behaviour of the accused killer in the time leading up to the murders.

Calgary police officers will likely stay at the crime scene until at least Saturday.

Matthew de Grood, 22, is charged with five counts of first-degree murder.

Brookwell said Thursday de Grood is currently in Calgary remand custody.

de Grood is scheduled to appear in a Calgary court on April 22.
