The Calgary Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit has shut down a marijuana grow operation in the community of Monterey Park and seized over 500 plants.

Police say that a tip from the public led them to a home on Los Alamos Place N.E. where they discovered 585 marijuana plants with a street value of over $731,000.

A warrant was issued on the property on November 8 and investigators found that the furnace and hot water tank had been altered to supply carbon dioxide to the plants.

Alberta Health Services and City of Calgary Building Inspectors have deemed the home unfit for human habitation.

“Marijuana grow ops pose significant risks to the community. They can be a fire hazard and they attract violence to the area,” said Acting Staff Sergeant Paul Wozney. “Public tips play a very important role in helping us to locate and shut-down these dangerous, criminal operations.”
