Roads and highways in the central and southern part of the province are in poor condition and motorists are advised to check conditions before heading out.

Officials say that travel on area highways is especially treacherous and many roads are snow covered and blowing snow is reducing visibility.

Heavy snowfall forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway from Calgary to Highway 36 near Brooks on Monday night due to severe road conditions.

Strathmore RCMP reopened Highway 1 from Calgary to Brooks at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday but say motorists should drive with caution and road and weather conditions are still poor.

Police and towing crews worked to remove vehicle traffic that was blocking Highway 1 on Tuesday to reopen the road. One of the main issues was at secondary Highway 21. A transport truck overturned and crews had to offload material.

Highway 2 north of Calgary isn’t much better.

While Airdrie to the City of Calgary is in fair condition, police are not recommending travel from Airdrie to Red Deer.

Highway 21 south of Three Hills is also closed and roadways leading out of Drumheller have been shut down.
