Police are investigating an officer involved shooting in the 2800 block of 12 Avenue S.E. that sent one man to hospital in life threatening condition.

Officers were called out to the Albert Park/Radisson Heights area at about 11:00 a.m. Tuesday and approached a suspicious vehicle.

“The officers were in the area conducting another investigation and it’s my understanding that somebody approached the officers asking them to investigate this vehicle,” said CPS S/Sgt Scott Todd.

Police say that at some point while they were interacting with the driver, the driver tried to flee.

Officers challenged the driver and a service weapon was fired. The vehicle then crashed into a home.

“By appearances, the vehicle appeared to continue down the road and did impact a house,” said S/Sgt Todd.

EMS officials say one man was taken to hospital for treatment.

“On arrival, we were met by police and were brought to a male patient in his early 20s who had sustained injuries as a result of an incident that occurred prior to our arrival. We initiated care at the scene and transported him to the Foothills Hospital in serious, potentially life threatening condition,” said Stuart Brideaux from Calgary EMS.

Brideaux says EMS assessed other people at the scene and says no one else was injured.

“No injuries in the home fortunately, there was a man and a child home at the time, they were actually not near where the vehicle entered the home fortunately, they were able to get out of the home safely and they were seen by EMS.”

Several blocks in the area are closed and the Alberta Serious Response Team has been called in to investigate.
