A Calgary entrepreneur has developed a streaming video service just for kids that allows parents to control the programs their children are watching online.

Kidoodle.TV’s content is designed for kids 12 and under and offers educational and brand-name cartoons like National Geographic, Inspector Gadget and Adventures of Chuck and Friends.

The idea was hatched innocently enough and started when the creator’s son opened a series of volcano videos and an ad for a horror movie popped up.

"My son bailed into the bathroom and he didn't sleep for three days. So that was really one of those, I was like, you know, this is something that there's a huge opportunity for," said Mike Lowe, Founder Kidoodle.TV.

The Kidoodle.TV service and app come with extensive parental controls and up to five profiles can be customized to filter titles and restrict content for different ages.

"Kids also like to watch the same show over and over again, as opposed to,  if you look at other services for adults you have to have new content, fresh content, big budget content, it's a very costly exercise," said Lowe. “We’re building a service that’s aimed just for kids. We’re not a service targeting kids, we’re a service built for kids.”

Parents can allow or block shows depending on what they feel is appropriate and the child can then view the content in a safe viewing environment.

Kara Kilfoil is trying out the streaming service for the first time and is aware that access to information has changed significantly over the past few years.

"Information is so abundant and so accessible in ways that are different from when I was a child, that I’m acutely aware that their experience  growing up is so different from mine because of sort of media exposure, that TV certainly plays into that so I’m aware of the influence on them," said Kilfoil.

Kilfoil says the ability to set an automatic time limit is also a big help.

“I like that you can pre-set the shows, that they're going to like, they're going to watch, that are safe that are shows we both approve of. That’s a really sort of nice feature of it as well," said Kilfoil.

The service costs $4.99 per month and parents can try it for free to see if they like it first.
