A devastating afternoon fire in the inner-city left two homes severely damaged but all residents are safe and accounted for.

On Saturday, at approximately 1:00 p.m., firefighters responded to an emergency call at a home in the 1000 block of 8 St. S.E.

On arrival, crews discover a home engulfed in fire with the flames spreading to the house next door.

A total of twelve people were in the homes at the time of the fire and all escaped unharmed.  A pet cat was rescued from one of the homes by fire crews.  The feline was in good health.

The buildings have been deemed unsafe due to the extent of the fire damage and residents will not be permitted to return to their homes.  Alternate accommodations are being arranged.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
