Investigators with the Calgary Fire Department are at the scene of a blaze that broke out outside a business in the downtown core.

The first call came in around 3 a.m. after smoke was spotted coming from the garage of Contempa Carpet on 11 Ave. S.W.

A dumpster inside the garage was hauled outside and the fire was quickly put out.

Crews say the fire was contained to the dumpster, but are looking over the building to make sure it didn’t suffer any damage.

Investigators believe something must have been tossed into the dumpster at some point.

“The dumpsters are housed within that area,” says Battalion Chief John Cherweniuk. “I guess throughout the day, something must have been put in one of those dumpsters and the dumpster lit on fire. Crews actually had to take some power tools to remove the doors to get access.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
