Authorities with the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) Unit have closed two homes in northwest Calgary following complaints of drug activity.

Two units of a fourplex at 7703 41 Ave. N.W. have been ordered closed until April 19 by a Community Safety Order.

Investigators say that the units must now be vacated by the owners and the property secured.

“The outcome of this investigation is a reminder to owners that they are accountable for the activity occurring at their property,” said SCAN Manager Billy Kerr. “We will continue to work with residents to ensure the safety of their neighbourhoods, while also encouraging owners and landlords to take responsibility for their property.”

SCAN units say that they’ve worked closely with the Calgary Police on this case and that the property has been an ongoing problem.

This is the second closure order for Eva Wyen, who owns both suites, within one year.

She was also served with a closure order on a house on Bowness Road.

That closure lasted 90 days and the home is still not safe to live in.

Wyen, in addition to losing the rent from the units, could also be ordered to pay for the closure costs.

That could be between $2,000 to $4,000 per property.

SCAN says that landlord need to be more attentive in screening tenants.

"It's very frustrating because she's well known to us," says Bill Kerr, SCAN manager. "She's been through the process, she knows her role as the landlord. She has to be more diligent in screening her tenants and making sure they're citizens who aren't causing harm."

Cheryl, a neighbour, says that the tenants who lived there never bothered them very much but they would get loud at night.

She adds that she saw police and bylaw officers there on a regular basis.

There is no word on any charges at this point.

Albertans who suspect a property in their neighbourhood is being used for illegal activity can contact SCAN toll-free at 1-866-960-SCAN (7226) or online at www.scan.alberta.ca. All complaints are confidential.

Residents are reminded never to investigate suspected problem properties on their own.
