Two men were killed after a group of young people went swimming in the Bow River near a popular cliff jumping spot on Sunday.

RCMP officers were called to an area east of the Seebe Dam, west of Calgary, on July 13 at about 4:30 p.m. for reports of a missing swimmer.

Police say three males, aged 26, 22 and 17, from Calgary, were attempting to swim across the dam to an area where they could jump from the cliffs into the Bow River below.

All three got into trouble as soon as they entered the water and went under. The 17-year-old was able to reach the shore but the two other men were unable to get out on their own.

The 22-year-old man surfaced and was unresponsive when he was removed from the water.

Police say he was transported by air ambulance to hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Search and rescue crews combed the area on Monday morning to try and locate the missing 26-year-old man.

Crews recovered the body of Chrisopher Guthrie on Monday at about 11:30 a.m.

The families of the young men are being assisted by Cochrane Victim Services.
