An afternoon crash involving ten vehicles sent two people to hospital and caused traffic delays in the area.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., emergency crews responded to southbound Deerfoot Trail at a location south of the Blackfoot Trail/17 Ave. S.E. overpass following a collision involving two semi-trailers, a cube van, and seven other vehicles.

Following the collision, vehicles involved in the crash stretched over a distance of more than 500 metres.

Fire crews extricated the driver of one car from the wreckage. EMS transported the unidentified driver, a man in his fifties, to hospital in serious but stable condition.

The driver of a semi suffered minor injuries in the crash and was transported to hospital by ambulance in stable, non-life threatening conditon.

Police closed two of the three southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail in the area. All lanes have reopened.

Police continue to investigate the crash.
