Police believe alcohol contributed to an early morning head-on crash on Memorial Dr. N.E. near the zoo overpass.

A 2011 Ford Ranger pickup truck driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Memorial Dr. collided head-on with a minivan at approximately 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Officers and EMS responded to the crash scene and discovered the drivers of the two vehicles were trapped in the wreckage.  The drivers were the lone occupants of their respective vehicles.

Calgary Fire extricated the pickup truck driver, a 27-year-old male, from his truck and EMS transported the unresponsive man in serious but stable condition to the Foothills Hospital.

The jaws-of-life were required to free the minivan driver, a 70-year-old man, and the process of removing the man safely from his van took nearly 35 minutes.  According to Stuart Brideaux of EMS, the minivan driver suffered lower body injuries and was transported to hospital in stable condition.

Traffic was detoured through the community of Bridgeland while police investigated the crash scene and crews removed the debris and vehicles.  Westbound Memorial Drive reopened at 5:15 a.m.

Police continue to investigate the events surrounding the crash and are speaking to witnesses.

Charges are pending against the driver of the pickup truck.
